how it works

Intervention brings together the persons who care about the addict. The process of preparing for the intervention is facilitated by the interventionist, Joyce Sundin. The goal is to move from a feeling of helplessness, confusion, and perhaps anger to a group educated about the dysfunction and focused on helping the addicted person.

With coaching from Joyce at a series of meetings, energy and strength will be found in the group to sort through specific options of action. Treatment for the addict, and support for the group members will be planned and put in place. When ready, the concerned group meets with the addicted person. At this point, the group has carefully prepared and rehearsed for this session, referred to as the "formal" intervention.

At the intervention, the addicted person hears how much the group cares for him/her; how the group is affected by his/her behavior; and the relationship they would like to have with the addicted person in the future. Under Joyce's guidance, the intervention is always loving, respectful, and safe. Help and support are offered but there is no debate.

Discussions in a group setting can often relieve the fear and pressure associated with confrontation during an intervention.
